Who is Jesus?

After suffering defeat at Waterloo and then having been exiled to the island of Saint Helena, the great military leader Napoleon asked the question “Who is Jesus?” to his fellow general Montholon. Napoleon answered his own question by saying, “I will tell you. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and myself have founded great empires. But our empires were founded on force. Jesus alone founded his empire on love, and to this day millions would die for him. I think I understand something of human nature, and I tell you, all these were men, and I am a man. Jesus Christ was more than man.”

Napoleon was right. Jesus was indeed a man, but he is also God. (John 14:6) Our belief that Jesus Christ is both God and man can be found both in Jesus’ claims about himself along with the miracles he performed. So why does this matter?

We believe the world God created bears the mark of imperfection and evil because sin has entered into it. This sin is bound up in the heart of every man and woman and has resulted in a severed relationship with God. Jesus is the answer to our brokenness. He lived a perfect, sinless life, and through his death took the punishment we deserve for our sin. But, that’s not the end of the story. Jesus did not stay dead. He conquered sin and death through his resurrection from the grave!

This is the gospel of Jesus. “Gospel” simply means good news. The good news is that God looked upon humanity’s brokenness and acted in love. Left to ourselves, we could never get to God, so he came to us. In love, he provided Jesus to bring forgiveness and reconciliation to a hurting and dying world.

So who is Jesus? Who we say he is is the most important decision we’ll ever make. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Our greatest desire is that every person be transformed by the love and forgiveness found in Jesus.
