With the Rev. Dr. Steven M. Marsh.
...The other night, Rob and I were talking about his education at Bucknell. I know that Bucknell is a sensitive subject when it comes to KU basketball fans. Rob and I were not talking about Bucknell’s basketball team. He has made the decision to double major in engineering and economics.
Janet and I are so proud of our children. Now my youngest has committed to a plan of action for his college curriculum, but most important for his life after college.
The thing that impressed me the most about the conversation Rob and I had was the ability he had to clearly articulate a vision for his life and the confidence he had that God was in it.
As I reflected back to him about God’s will for his life being to know Jesus and to make him known, I was so encouraged to see in Rob’s eyes the strong confidence that he knew he was a follower of Jesus first and a man who one day would have a career in business that required his critical thinking skills and fundamental market-based economic background second.
As a parent, I know that all parents want the best for their children. That is why all of us encourage, prod and insist to our children that education and extracurricular activities are important. But, the most important thing Janet and I stressed, which I believe all parents who are followers of Jesus should stress as well, is that our children see their relationship with Jesus Christ as the first and foremost priority.
It was late the other night when Rob and I finished our discussion. When I put my head down on the pillow, I gave God great praise for his promise that what he started in Rob’s life he would finish. Oh, how I rest in the truth of Philippians 1:6.
May you take great confidence in knowing and seeing that what God started in the lives of those whom you love, he is finishing.
